My Favorite Ukulele Player

Being new to the fever, I haven’t learned of a lot of the famous top ukulele players yet, but maybe that doesn’t matter much. There are many trendy pop musicians that have featured some ukulele in their songs, but one classic player and my favorite is the late George Harrison.  Perhaps he’s not as well known for his playing of the ukulele as he was for guitar and the songs he wrote and performed as a solo artist, one of The Traveling Wilburys, and another band that had something to do with a BUG. The Beatles?  Something like that. 🙂 Anyway, in the few videos on youtube where you can see him playing uke, he demonstrates the heart and passion he had for the instrument and the music. and I find that inspiring. Here’s a short video that I hope you will enjoy. In it Tom Petty describes some of George’s fondness for ukuleles and you get a small sample of his music at the end. Play on.

“George Harrison played a range of Kamakas including the concert, the tenor 6-string, and the tenor 8-string. According to one music store on Maui, Harrison would buy out all the available Kamakas in stock to give as gifts to friends.” from the Kamaka website.

I visited the Kamaka factory in Oahu a couple years ago. Would love to have one of their beautiful ukuleles! I looked on their website and they still make those ukuleles with double strings on some of the notes. I think it would be hard to play. I have a long way to go to play them! LOL

Hey Jim, you’re exactly right about George Harrison and the ukulele. He loved the uke.

Here are a couple of his friends who tell about their experience with George and the ukulele.

Here’s the first one, with a fellow named Joe Brown. You might not know Joe but he was a very good friend of George’s. As a matter of fact, he played the ending song, a version of “I’ll See You in My Dreams” at the end of the tribute concert to George.

Here’s a link first to the tribute concert ending:

Here’s the link to Joe talking about George and the ukulele, starts at 10:18 in the video. It does continue after the commercial.:

Here’s Tom Petty’s comments about George and the ukulele:

Craig’s music in Weatherford sells Kamaka ukuleles, but they don’t have any right now.
